A Brief Post History

Bateman-Gallagher American Legion Post 668 was formed in 1933, receiving a Temporary Charter from the American Legion on July 31, 1933.

On February 23, 1934 a permanent Charter was issued.

Our Post 668 was appropriately named after two World War 1 infantrymen from Radnor township, both of whom were graduates of Radnor High School. They interrupted their College educations to enlist and serve in the American Expedititionary Forces (AEF) in France.

Lieutenant William Bateman was killed on July 15, 1918, leading a platoon of the 109th Division Infantrymen, a part of the 29th "Keystone" Division, AEF in the Second Battle of Marne River in France.  The 109th was part of the Pennsylvania National Guard.

On October 11, 1918, Captain (Acting) Edward G. Gallagher died leading troops of the 3rd Infantry Division in the Battle of Montfaucon, at Madeleine Farm, France. This battle was part of the final push in the Meuse-Argonne offensive which lasted until Armistice Day on November 11, 1918.

The heroism of these two young neighbors was the inspiration and focal point for the tradition of service that was carried on by the men and women who returned to Wayne Pennsylvania with victorious troops of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in 1919.

There is no space here for even a brief roll-call of those World War 1 Veterans who comitted themselves to a life of service to: "Veterans and their Families" through the American Legion. Those induviduals established Post 668 here in Wayne over 93 years ago.

In 1946, Nick and Mary Travaglini, through conveyance to Bateman-Gallagher Post 668, transferred their property at 401 E Lancaster Avenue, Waynne, PA  to us making it our permanent Post Home.
